Beacon Lighthouse started in a simple room at Washington Jackson Elementary School as an incorporated agency in 1975. Three years later it was moved to its present location on 7th street. After major expansions in 1984 the legal name was permanently changed to Beacon Lighthouse, Inc. Today, Beacon Lighthouse occupies over 50,000 square feet of industrial and office space. It serves as an industrial manufacturer, offering continuous job placement for the blind and visually impaired.

Beacon Lighthouse manufactures products for industrial, wholesale, retail, and government markets. The manufacturing floor utilizes modern production processes and automatic machinery. Beacon products include scrubbing pads, floor pads, twist-n-fil liquids, aircraft cleaning kits, sponge scrubbers, bathroom and/or kitchen cleaners, griddle cleaning kits, wire stainless steel scrubbers and a tool line. Over 90% of production personnel are visually impaired with blind and visually impaired individuals working throughout the facility. There are many tools now available to help support the blind in their everyday lives. Beacon is looking for support to make these new items available for its staff.

The tools that would be beneficial to the blind and visually impaired are items that make life simpler.  Beacon Lighthouse could use color readers that tell the colors of the scrubbing material. Another item is an American flag that is textured for the visually impaired to feel.  Keyboards are available with large print to make keyboarding accessible. Computers and technology expand the abilities of what the blind are capable of achieving. Modern technology is making life easier, but it requires funding. The profit from sales goes to support the employees in their everyday lives. Beacon's mission to enhance the lives of the blind and visually impaired can be supported through Texoma Gives 2024. Please help to support the mission of Beacon Lighthouse.
