The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.​

No one else does this: not the government, not other charities. From small house fires to natural disasters, the American Red Cross goes wherever we’re needed, so people can have clean water, safe shelter and hot meals when they need them most.

Who We Are

Disasters happen every day. The American Red Cross helps alleviate the suffering of those impacted by disasters such as wildfires, tornadoes, home fires and more.

Last month, several tornadoes touched down across the Big Country, including Taylor County. Red Cross responders stepped up to help those affected and continue to help the community prepare for the next time a tornado or other severe weather strikes.

On Average, the Red Cross responds to more than 62,000 disasters every year – the majority of which are home fires. Smoke alarms and a practiced escape plan help save lives. Since 2014, the Red Cross has committed to decreasing the number of deaths and injuries that occur because of a home fire. Our team is always ready to help install smoke alarms and help a family develop their home fire escape plan. Through this commitment to home fire preparedness, we’ve helped save more than 700 lives and prevented injuries sustained in a home fire. The support of our donors helps us provide free smoke alarms and educational resources to help keep families safe.

Texas is a big state and our Big Country Chapter includes teams of staff and volunteers serving over 680,000 people from Wichita Falls to Brownwood and all areas in between.

The Abilene area (Chapter Headquarters) team covers the counties of Callahan, Eastland, Fisher, Jones, Kent, Mitchell, Nolan, Scurry, Shackelford, Stephens, Stonewall & Taylor.

The Wichita Falls team covers Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cottle, Foard, Hardeman, Haskell, Jack, Knox, Throckmorton, Wichita, Wilbarger & Young counties.

Our San Angelo and Brownwood area teams cover the counties of Brown, Coke, Coleman, Comanche, Concho, McCulloch, Mills, Runnels, San Saba, Schleicher and Tom Green counties.
